When & where do we recycle? Can we wait to start recycling? The answer is "no". A great effort has been underway for the last couple of years to bring new and modern efficient methods of recycling to Kentucky. This past year the "Single Stream plus Glass" system began in Lexington, Kentucky and simply astounded the community with its easy and simple use. Recycling starts in our homes, schools and workplaces and with a little effort we can make a difference. Door to door collection is the answer for recycling on an economic scale in Kentucky. This can be accomplished by the same waste management company that picks up the garbage in your home now. The recycle route can be established on different days and use a different container for recyclable goods. Either the waste management company or local governments with a small rental fee can provide the containers. With a Single Stream + Glass system a homeowner can place his paper, plastic and cans into one container. Glass has to be kept separate and still dropped off at your local recycling center. Glass is recycled but has to be kept separate because it will harm the machinery that separates paper, plastic, and metal. You can start a paper route and collect at your local school or civic organization. The collected materials can be picked up by a local recycling center or a special BRRC recycling container can be placed in these facilities with pick-up arranged as soon as the container becomes full. A special school project will begin by the end of 2004 in 4 counties in the Bluegrass area of Kentucky. Log on to our media page to watch video streams pertaining to Single-Stream + Glass. ![]() |
